The company Hyperschall Technologie Göttingen was in founded in 1989 in Göttingen by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Georg Koppenwallner. He was a lecturer at the TU Braunschweig for many years, giving lectures in aerothermodynamics and satellite aerodynamics and worked closely with the Institute for Fluid Dynamics.
One year after the foundation, the company moved to the "Zentrum für Innovation Lindau" (ZIL) in Katlenburg-Lindau. In 1997 a separate company building was built in today's Albert-Einstein-Str. 11 in direct vicinity to the ZIL and the Max-Planck-Institute for Aeronomy. In the same year, the company Hyperschall- und Strömungstechnik GmbH (HST) was founded which is located in the same building.
